Gold Coast set to host Australia’s largest multi-sport university event

Attracting more than 9,000 student-athletes from across Australia, the 2017 Australian University Games is the country’s largest multi-sport event for university student-athletes. It will take place from 24-29 September across Australia’s iconic Gold Coast.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Games returns to Queensland for the first time since 2015 and will feature 33 sports played across 30 sporting venues – many of which will be showcased in next year’s Commonwealth Games.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp said that the student experience can be greatly enhanced through participation in sporting activities while studying.

“Events such as the Australian University Games provide student-athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual career education and sport pathway, in turn contributing to better retention and completion rates for today’s student-athletes enrolled in tertiary education,” Mr Knapp said.

“The Games activate broader participation across our 42 member universities. Participants will experience the highest quality intervarsity competition available in Australia at some of the best sporting facilities in the country.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the city was proud to be a corporate sponsor of the Australian University Games.

“The Gold Coast is a leading events destination, particularly in the sporting realm, so we warmly welcome the 9,000 competitors and support staff with open arms,” he said.

“This event not only brings immediate economic benefit through accommodation and spending, it brings long term benefits by promoting the Gold Coast as an ideal place to study, work, do business and live.”

The Australian University Games is managed by Australian University Sport, the governing body of university sport in Australia, and delivered in partnership with Event Partner - City of Gold Coast and Strategic Partner - Tourism and Events Queensland.

The Queensland Government is proud to support the Australian University Games through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
