Emerging Boomers slam dunk performance over Russia

The Emerging Boomers scored a comprehensive 89-71 win over pool D opponents Russia at Taipei Arena at the Summer Universiade in Taipei.

Leading at every break, University of Miami’s Dejan Vasiljevic was once again most prolific on the scoreboard, ending the game with 22 points.

Sydney-born Gorjok Gak (University of Florida), whose parents were Sudanese refugees, was solid across the court finishing the encounter with 16 points and 11 rebounds, five of which were offensive rebounds.

Deakin University’s Kyle Adnam said it was the all-round team performance that was in the difference in the end.

“Across the board I think we did well,” Adnam said.

“It’s a team oriented game… Everyone played super hard today and we wore the jersey proudly.”

“It was really big for us, we didn’t play the way we wanted to last night so to come out today like that was great.”

The Emerging Boomers were a hit with the local crowd and the boys were more than happy to share a few selfies with their fans.

“The crowds have really got around us Aussie boys the last few days and I know it means a lot to the boys so hopefully we can see some quarterfinal action and go from there.”

For Australia’s basketball contingent, it was good to get the win over the Russians, who edged out the Emerging Opals in a thriller in the women’s basketball yesterday. The Emerging Opals have advanced to the quarterfinals and will play the USA on Friday at 7:30pm AEST.

The Emerging Boomers’ next assignment will be a very winnable game against winless Mozambique on Friday at 12:00pm AEST.
