The 2017 Australian University Championship for 3x3 Basketball, presented by JanSport, has come to a close, with Monash University defeating Griffith University Gold Coast in the women's competition, whilst Macquarie University were eventual champions defeating cross town rival The University of Sydney in the men's.

After two days of competition at Pacific Fair's Resort area, both gold medal matches were spectacles. Griffith University Gold Coast held a strong lead until the final minute of the women's final, where Monash were able to tie it up, forcing the game into overtime. An eventual 'hail Mary' from Monash in overtime secured the gold medal, 14-12.
A dominant display from a fluid Macquarie University offense was able to dispatch The University of Sydney, with the two Eastern region teams putting on a physical display. The undefeated Macquarie team proved too much in the end, winning 20-17.
The competition marked the 4th phase of a qualifying pathway which saw student-athletes compete for a representative spot at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) 3x3 Basketball World University League (WUL) in Xiamen, China. The winning teams have now secured a spot, all expenses paid, to represent Oceania at the 3x3 World University League from 14-17 September.
Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp says the international trip to China adds another dimension to the range of sport events already on offer to Australian university student-athletes.
“A key aim of Australian University Sport is to enable student-athletes to participate in competitive sport at regional, national and international levels through a dual career education and sport pathway,” Mr Knapp said.
“The FISU Oceania 3x3 WUL Qualifying Final, presented by JanSport, is the perfect way to celebrate intervarsity rivalry and sport participation opportunities by providing student-athletes the opportunity to qualify and represent Oceania at the World University League in China.”
JanSport representative Jacqui Holden said, “We’re excited to continue our involvement with the Australian University Games and congratulate all teams who competed in the 3x3 basketball tournament.”
