Newcastle ready to host 2017 Eastern University Games

The largest university sporting event to be held in Newcastle this year, the 2017 Eastern University Games, was launched on Wednesday 5 April at the University of Newcastle.

Expected to attract more than 3,000 student-athletes from New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, the 2017 Eastern University Games will be held from 2-6 July and include 17 sports.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp is pleased to see the event return to Newcastle, after last being hosted in the city in 2014.

“Regional university sporting events provide student-athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual education and sport pathway, which results in both tertiary qualifications and sport participation at all levels of sport across Australia,” Mr Knapp said.

“Sport programs on campus are proven to contribute toward higher levels of student recruitment, retention, completion of study and employability,” Mr Knapp added.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said: “Newcastle has a proud sporting history and will embrace our visiting athletes. I always enjoyed the friendly competition at the University Games.”

“There's also plenty for visiting students to do and see here, from visiting our galleries, museums and beaches to enjoying the city's cafes, restaurants and night life, so I'm sure all the students will have four days of fun come July.”

“Newcastle has a fine track record of hosting large sporting events, such as the Eastern Unigames in 2014, rugby and rugby league tests and the 2015 Asian Cup Football matches, and we're currently gearing up to host the inaugural Supercars event in November.”

Professor Caroline McMillen, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle welcomed students from institutions across Australia’s eastern states.

“We are delighted to be hosting the 2017 Eastern University Games at our outstanding sporting and recreation facilities here at UON.”

“Our previous hosting experience in 2014 was a great success and indeed, UON won the event on that occasion. Given the talent and real determination that characterises our student athletes, I am sure they are well-placed to repeat this achievement on our home ground again this year.”

“I wish all competitors and volunteers a successful Games and hope they enjoy visiting our beautiful campus and city.”

The 2017 Eastern University Games is one of four Regional University Games held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the 2017 Australian University Games (24-29 September) on the Gold Coast.

The Eastern University Games is managed by Australian University Sport, the governing body of university sport in Australia, and hosted by the University of Newcastle and Newcastle University Sport in partnership with Newcastle City Council.
