Monash trumps QUT in League of Legends University Final

A hard fought, four-hour marathon of a battle saw Monash University triumph over Queensland University of Technology in the first ever instalment of the League of Legends University Final.

Jointly hosted by Riot Games Oceania and Australian University Sport, the event filled the Northbridge Piazza with hundreds of spectators and gamers congregating in the heart of Perth, with students and the general public flocking to see all the action. There was also a large following watching the live stream of the event online. Throughout the night the crowd also got the opportunity to engage in a range of activities provided by Accenture and beyondblue.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp noted the significant impact of the inclusion of League of Legends into the Regional and Australian University Games, given the growing popularity of gaming throughout the university population. The inclusion of this new event allows for more students to represent their universities at a national level.

“The tertiary education community is embracing new technologies, such as eSports, as tools to increase engagement of university students on campus,” Mr Knapp said.

“The student engagement opportunities that have resulted from the inclusion of League of Legends in our events, culminating in the League of Legends University Final, have been embraced by our member universities and most importantly the broader student market.”

Following the success of the introduction of League of Legends into the Australian University Games schedule, Australian University Sport is looking forward to the expansion and development of the event in 2017.
