The largest university sporting event to be held in Bunbury this year – the inaugural 2016 Western University Games, presented by Alcohol.Think Again – begins next week, hosted by Edith Cowan University.
Expected to attract more than 700 student-athletes from across Western Australia, the 2016 Western University Games will be held from 3-6 July offering 15 sports.
Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp is pleased the inaugural competition is being held in Bunbury.
“Regional university sporting events provide student-athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual education and sport pathway, which results in both tertiary qualifications and sport participation at all levels of sport across Australia,” Mr Knapp said.
“Student experience can be greatly enhanced through participation in sporting activities while studying. This type of engagement in turn contributes to better retention and completion rates for today’s student-athletes enrolled in tertiary education.”
Healthway’s Acting Executive Director, Maree De Lacey, said the Games are an ideal opportunity for Healthway to promote a safe drinking message to young university students who are the next generation of community leaders in Western Australia.
“Drinking alcohol increases the risk of accidents, injuries and health problems,” Ms De Lacey said. “Healthway sponsorships promoting the ‘Alcohol.Think Again’ message have resonated extremely well with young people by prompting them to review how much alcohol they drink, including drinking less.”

City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said the Western University Games will provide significant economic benefits for the City through the use of local sporting venues, accommodation providers, restaurants, transport and tourist attractions.
“I am confident the participants and other visitors will be made very welcome and impressed by our hospitality.”
The 2016 Western University Games is one of four Regional Unigames held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the 2016 Australian University Games (25-30 September) in Perth.
The Western University Games is managed by Australian University Sport, the governing body of university sport in Australia; presented by Alcohol.Think Again, hosted by Edith Cowan University and sponsored by Healthway.
