Governance

Australian University Sport (AUS) takes great pride in ensuring that it governs the University Sport industry with integrity, forward thinking and collaboration with its members. The following pages detail the governance structure that AUS has implemented and the direction that the organisation and industry will be heading in the coming years.

AUS Board

Australian University Sport (AUS) is a not for profit company limited by guarantee. Australian University Sport is governed by a nine-person Board comprising of six member-elected directors, two independent directors appointed by the Board and one director appointed by Universities Australia.

Each elected Board Director and the President serve on the Board for an initial two year term after which they can choose to submit a nomination to be re-elected for a further term.

The Board meets a minimum of five times per year and is represented by the following people.

Chair - Deidre Anderson

Chair - Deidre Anderson

Deidre has held senior sports executive positions at both an international and national level and her contribution to elite sport has been acknowledged worldwide. She is published widely in the areas of coaching and career transition in sport and has a lifelong commitment to supporting the development of young people.

Deputy Chair - David Schmude

David has broad experience in sports management and marketing at both a national and regional level. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of UNE Life at the University of New England in Armidale.

Martin has been the Director of Sport at Monash University since 2002. Martin has a wide range of experiences gleaned over 30 plus years of involvement in the sports and leisure industry.

Universities Australia appointed Director - Prof. Tim Brailsford

Professor Brailsford is the Vice Chancellor and President of Bond University, appointed from January 2012.

Independent skills based Director - Peter McGrath

Peter is a Corporate/Sports lawyer and administrator with extensive experience in corporate law especially relating to corporate governance.

Independent skills based Director - Sarah Richardson

Sarah brings strategic, financial and corporate governance skills from three decades of board and executive experience in not-for-profits, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) and multinationals in Australia, France and the US.

Ex-officio and CEO - Don Knapp

Don is the current CEO of Australian University Sport. Don’s professional background includes 15 years in education, and 20 years in sports management.

Director – Chris Massey

Director – Chris Massey

Chris brings 25 years’ education sector experience encompassing tertiary and secondary teaching, physical education, and management of an educational self-esteem program in Australia and Singapore. Chris is currently the Director (and Equity and Diversity Advisor) of UWA Student Life aimed at improving the UWA student experience. His portfolio includes oversight of UWA Sport, Student Accommodation Office, Health Promotion Unit, Medical Centre and Early Learning Centres. He is also Deputy Chair of the UWA Critical Incident Team.

Director – Prof. Russell Hoye

Professor Hoye is currently the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Development) at La Trobe University and Director of La Trobe Sport.
